Woodwind Refresher Course for Adults

Playing a musical instrument has benefits that last a lifetime

"I used to play the flute, but gave it up.  Now I'm watching my kids play and I really wish I hadn't quit."

Is this you?  If it is, you're not alone.  We hear stories like this all the time- adults who "used to play," but for one reason or another dropped out.  Almost invariably, they express regret over ever having quit.

That's why we have created a special set of Refresher Courses for adults with one or more years' experience playing a woodwind instrument.  These classes are designed especially to give you a fast track towards becoming a real player again.

Think about it.  If you ever played a flute or clarinet, you are one of a special group of people who already have the skills that it takes to succeed at these instruments.  Through a process called neuromuscular programming, your brain and muscles have been pre-trained to know exactly what to do once you take that instrument back into your hands.

In other words, you're hard-wired for success.  So even if you haven't played for years, or never got all that far in the first place, you probably know a lot more than you think you do.  All it would take for you to once again reap the benefits of playing a musical instrument is a few good lessons from a competent teacher.  And the benefits are many:

When You Play Your Instrument, You Will Enjoy:

  • Benefits to your brain.  Music study leads to many positive changes in brain chemistry and function.  The research on advantages of music study for children is well documented, but didIf you played once, it's easy to pick it up again! you know that the benefits continue into adulthood?  Studies have shown that adults who play have higher levels of human growth hormone and are less prone to anxiety, loneliness and depression than their non-musical peers.
  • Relief from stress.   Playing music results in measurable decreases in stress levels.  As you become more accomplished, you will feel your stress melt away when you play, as if you could blow your troubles away through your instrument.
  • A sense of achievement.  Playing a musical instrument is a real accomplishment that will make you feel good about yourself- and with practice you will certainly win the respect and admiration of those around you.
  • A skill to share.  Many adults with musical skills derive much pleasure from sharing their gift with others, through playing in church, at social events such as weddings, and just getting together to play with other musicians.  In fact, it's a great way to make new friends!
  • A fun activity!  When you get down to it, playing music is just plain enjoyable.  So why should kids have all the fun!?  After all, playing an instrument is something you can never outgrow.

Now, if you ever played a woodwind instrument, you could probably pick up your old flute or clarinet and a fingering chart and pick out a few tunes on your own without too much difficulty.  (In fact, we highly recommend that you do, if you still have your horn.)  But if you really want to get the most out of the experience, the direction of a capable teacher will put you light years ahead of where you would be on your own.

Meet Dan Michelsen, Teacher of Woodwinds:

Dan Michelsen is proficient in playing and teaching multiple woodwinds.Dan Michelsen, owner and head repairman of Michelsen Music and instructor of our Adult Refresher Courses, has over 30 years' experience as a successful player and teacher of woodwinds.

His music career began in New York, where he studied under Broadway pit musician Charles Millard.  He performed there as a member of the Mount Vernon Municipal Band (the oldest municipal band in the country), the Port Chester American Legion Band, and the Larchmont Pops Band, as well as various pit orchestras.

Mr. Michelsen graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1978 with a degree in music education.  He subsequently founded the band program in the Marquette, MI Catholic schools, and taught public school high school and middle school band and K-12 general music before starting Michelsen Music Repair & Supply in the fall of 1982.

Since starting the business, Mr. Michelsen has continued to keep up his chops as a woodwind doubler, playing clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, piccolo, sax and bassoon in numerous venues and performances.   A long-time concertmaster and president of the Marquette, MI City Band, he also played first bassoon for many years with the Keewenau Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the Negaunee, MI City Band and numerous musical theater pit orchestras.  Since moving to Wausau in 2006 he has performed for several musical theater productions, including the Wausau Community Theater's production of Nunsense, and has played bass clarinet with the Wausau Symphony and Band.

His real love, however, is teaching, and this is where he really shines.  In the course of running the music store, Mr. Michelsen has had the opportunity to start thousands of beginners while helping with fitting sessions, and this has allowed him to perfect the art of describing proper embouchure and playing technique.  His private students display a pattern of rapid progression and a thorough understanding of musicianship.
